Foot and ankle pathology is common in physical therapy practice. Overuse injuries are often a result of abnormal foot mechanics or due to imbalances higher in the kinetic chain. This course will review the examination and treatment of selected foot and ankle pathologies impacting patients across the adult lifespan. Through lecture presentations, hands-on laboratory sessions and discussions of clinical presentations and case studies, participants will gain an understanding of normal and abnormal gait as it relates to orthopedic dysfunction. In addition, participants will gain an understanding of various foot and ankle pathologies and evidence-based treatment interventions to maximize function.

- Describe the anatomy and biomechanics of the foot and ankle complex.
- Distinguish between normal and abnormal lower quarter biomechanics during walking and running.
- Apply sound clinical reasoning skills and evidence-based clinical measures to the evaluation of the foot and ankle complex.
- Discuss biomechanical exam findings of the lower quarter and utilize the information to design an appropriate treatment plan.
- Appreciate the influence of lower quarter extrinsic abnormalities and discuss the effect on lower extremity closed kinetic chain function.
- Integrate footwear recommendations and orthotic therapy into the treatment plans of patients with lower quarter dysfunction.
