CLARISA ARAGÓN & JONATHAN SAAVEDRA – Tango Essentials 2.0

The more lessons and workshops we take, more steps we learn. And yet, the most important in tango, is to return to the base over and over again… When we have a problem in a big, beautiful, very difficult step, most of the times, it occurs because of a problem in our base. When we have the tango fundamentals deeply ingrained in our body’s memory, in a solid, flawless way, everything else becomes effortless and pleasantly achievable. Let’s really master the fundamentals!

Why this

Experienced tango dancers know that the most difficult things are actually: performing a masterful change of weight; a fluid step transition; maintain a trustful connection with our partner, and adapt it, no matter the kind of embrace we choose; maintain a posture that makes our tango healthy, comfortable and beautiful; have a vast, and almost unaware awareness of what’s around us; teach our body so well the music of tango, that it can guess what’s coming, even if we’ve never heard a certain song before… And when we find ourselves on the dance floor, flowing with all these basic elements in harmony, we live the surreal bliss of tango.

12 lessons

01 Diving Deeper into the Tango Embrace
You ought to make the radiography of all tango elements and figures, in order to understand them. But only together they become meaningful and create a balanced dance. Together they create a mood. We, as dancers, are part of this assemblage, shaping up the tango culture in a certain moment, in a certain space, with our way of dancing. What if one of our happiest moments is when we get to be surprised in this process?

02 The Shift of Weight in Tango
In tango we develop a special awareness of our body, and of its position in space. The more we dance, the more we get to know, and feel our body. This lesson is packed with exercises that will help you accelerate the process of being simultaneously aware of what is happening in different parts of your body when you dance tango in order to better direct your leading and following. Learning to direct your body can inspire a way of directing your emotions and thoughts, too.

03 About the Importance of Following
The role of following is not only powerful, but determining. The way we follow will make or break the whole: our couple connection, the way we feel when dancing, the way we inspire the public watching our performance. And following is not only about trusting the message transmitted by the leader, but also trusting in our response. Following is all about being confident in our axis, in our posture, in our intention to step forward, and much more…

04 Diving Deeper into the Musicality in Tango
In terms of musicality, tango dancers usually step on the 1st beat and on the 3rd beat of a music measure. What if we explore a different way of stepping on the music? What changes can we make in order to find our own way of interacting with it? In this lesson, while doing exercises related to musicality, you’ll also pair those with tango technique work.

05 Diving Even Deeper into the Tango Embrace
Each tango embrace is unique. And just like in life, in order to find a harmonious fit with another, we’ll slightly adapt to their way of being. We’re always making this kind of steps towards each other in order to be able to meet in the middle. In tango, we do this, too. We adapt our embraces, our dynamics, our way of transmitting and receiving information. In this lesson, you’ll find important tips that will help you adapt your embrace to different styles of dancing, for your comfort, freedom, and for a better connection with your partner.

06 Foundational Tango Elements: the Rebound
The Rebound is a beautiful, useful, even picaresque element you can use in tango in order to change your direction of displacement to the opposite side without pivoting. Remember that, since in a social set up like a milonga, we navigate the dance floor along with many other couples, mastering the concept of Change of Direction is simply a must. Rebounds are easy when we make them alone, but performing them smoothly and precisely together with another person, requires a clear preparation and communication. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to do it!

07 Diving Even Deeper into the Tango Walk
In tango we don’t have just one size for the step when walking. You can make extremely short, short, normal, longer, very long steps, but the important question here is how we’re going to create different kinds of alternatives together. No matter the size of the step we’ll choose to make, it’s an information we need to be able to communicate effectively and clearly to our partner when leading. And when following, we need to be able to understand that information, and translate it so well in our movement, that our partner can take it to the next move.

08 The Shift of Weight. Diving Even Deeper
We’ll say it again: in tango, the basic things are the most important ones. Because when mastering them, you’ll be able to create with freedom, anything! And most importantly, those creations of yours will be durable, safe, beautiful and powerful. Take any fundamental element in tango, and you can go deeper, and deeper, and deeper. Endlessly. In this lesson, we’ll dive deeper in the concept of the shift of weight. You can shift the weight together or individually, depending on what movements you’ll be creating. These are some subtle actions you’ll be studying everything about, in this lesson.

09 Dancing Comfortably: The Concept of Lanes in the Tango Embrace
It might be simpler to find and maintain a comfortable embrace when walking, but the issues appear when we try to turn, or do some more difficult things in close, or even open embrace. It’s then, when we can easily loose the connection, and with it a very important communication tool in tango. You’ll find out in this lesson how to accommodate your torso in the embrace, in order to feel confortable and connected in any steps or figures you might be doing.

10 A Change of Direction in the Walk, Very Useful for the Social Tango
When dancing socially in the milonga, while walking, the trajectory we follow is a big circle. And so, we are used to change slightly the direction of our displacement in space in order to follow the dance floor. However, it’s very useful to have the tools that give us the possibility to change our direction, walking, more radically, like 90 degrees, or even 180 degrees. You can use this tool for creative endeavors, but also for “safety” reasons, when for example, another couple on the dance floor changes their direction unexpectedly.

11 Get Creative and Improvise with Your Social Tango 1
When we start taking tango lessons, we understand the concepts of the Ocho, of the weight shift, of many other elements. But what happens when we go to dance? At the beginning, it’s difficult to combine all these things in a way that flows easily, to connect them coherently, and create different alternatives, so that we experience a more interesting dance. In this lesson you’ll see how to put our tango knowledge to work.

12 Get Creative and Improvise with Your Social Tango 2
When we perform the Cross, most of the times, followers change the weight automatically, and continue with the other leg. In this lesson, we’ll break the pattern, and see what we can build when we do that. So let’s continue with the work on creative combinations started in the previous lesson!
