CLARISA ARAGÓN & JONATHAN SAAVEDRA – Deeper Within our Eclectic Tango Changes of Dynamics

Clarisa & Jonathan’s favorite tango orchestra is Pugliese. It only makes sense that their tango style would be non-linear, bright, unexpected, bold, profound, mixed… We see them as valuators of the unique. They want you to be you, not them. That is why in this collection, as in all their teaching, Clarisa & Jonathan will deconstruct the meta concepts they use in order to build their dynamic, even striking way of dancing. Take these concepts and use them as tools to create your own, unique expression. Study the lessons in this collection, and prepare for a quantum leap in the quality of your dance!

Why this

You might have heard that tango is essentially composed of three steps: forward, backward and lateral step. Then what makes it so complex? Varied? Rich? Perhaps it’s the endless creativity that emerges from tango’s sophisticated simplicity, plus all the tools tango dancers use creatively in order to nurture their uniqueness. This collection is packed with this kind of priceless tools. You’ll take a deep look at what really dynamics mean, and how to use them in your dance; at how to prepare a fast movement so that it looks and feels effortless, or, more importantly, how to stop it without collapsing… And much more.

01 Change of Dynamics or The Subtle Art of Tango Communication
The main reason why Clarisa & Jonathan use the Changes of Dynamics as an important resource in their tango, is the surprise. Not only in order to surprise the people watching them dancing, but each other, too. Many times, the concept of Change of Dynamics is confused with fast figures, or variations. But the Changes of Dynamics don’t equal fast. They mean so much more. And in this lesson, you’ll dive into their power and subtlety they can bring to your tango.

02 Change of Dynamics: Preparation
A Change of Dynamics involves altering the intensity, speed, and energy of movements in our dance. Knowing how to prepare this event allows for smooth and seamless transitions. By anticipating and preparing for the change, we can execute the transition in a controlled and coordinated manner, in order to prevent abrupt or awkward shifts in the dance, and maintain the flow. For the leader, it’s very important how they create the proposal of a change of dynamics, and for the follower how they will answer this proposal.

03 Change of Dynamics: Activation
The concept of Change of Dynamics is a complex one. There are many details upon which its quality depends. In this lesson, Clarisa and Jonathan introduce a priceless concept that will greatly improve the communication in dance between you and your partner. Not only when you perform Changes of Dynamics, but also, akin to the butterfly effect, will positively impact the overall quality of your leading and following.

04 Change of Dynamics: Reaction
In the previous lesson, we have learned about and practiced one of the Change of Dynamics components – the Activation. Now, we’ll be exploring another one – the Reaction. Just like with the Activation, mastering Reaction will be extremely valuable in your tango dance in general, not just in Changes of Dynamics. It will help you easily adapt to the person you’re dancing with, no matter who that person is. Remember that in social tango, we acquire the skill of dancing comfortably with persons from all over the world, even when encountering them for the first time.

05 Change of Dynamics: Unifying Activation & Reaction
By mastering the art of seamlessly integrating Activation and Reaction, you can attain a harmonious balance within your body while dancing. This skill is not only crucial for your overall well-being and comfort but also for establishing effective communication with your dance partner and exuding a captivating and influential presence on the dance floor. Embracing this invaluable lesson will serve as a transformative tool, enhancing your tango skills in general. Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to elevate your dancing prowess!

06 Change of Dynamics: All Phases Together, and the Relaxation
The time has come to synergize all the components of Change of Dynamics that we have studied thus far, while also recalling tools from previous collections. Additionally, we’ll explore and embody the final component of Change of Dynamics: Relaxation—a remarkably valuable and indispensable element. When initiating a Change of Dynamics, it is crucial to look for the moment preceding it, known as the Preparation. Subsequently, the Follower’s response emerges, which must be conveyed with clarity and attentively listened to. Through its concepts, tango teaches us a potent, organic, and empathetic mode of communication—a skill we’ll naturally transfer to all aspects of our lives.

07 Leading the Change of Dynamics in the Ocho
What you’ll learn in this lesson regarding leading Ochos with a change in movement dynamics is in fact important when leading any Pivot, but even more so when we transition from slower to faster movements. In such instances, paying even more attention is required, since increased speed poses a greater risk of disrupting the connection with our dance partner. By now we understand that in tango, we embody the art of gracefully navigating the dance floor while maintaining an absolute connection with our partner. And, of course, you can think of the dance floor as of a metaphor of life itself.

08 The Concept of Directions & Intentions in Leading and Following
The technique we’ll delve into and practice in this lesson, concerning the directions and intentions in leading and following, is in fact, an aspect applicable to all your movements in tango. While a first perspective may suggest a we have a single line when moving forward, delving into the intricate subtleties of tango—where its richness lies—we discover the existence of three distinct lines upon which we step. It becomes apparent that this realization transcends mere external observation; rather, it is a matter of deep internal perception.

09 Using the Centrifugal Force in Dance
Centrifugal force refers to the outward force experienced by an object moving in a curved path. When applied effectively in tango, it allows for a smoother and more fluid connection between partners while adding energy, excitement and momentum to the dance. The use of centrifugal force requires proper technique and body control. When using it, we naturally keep our embrace. However, the part of the Embrace that is highlighted is our back, plus the off-axis movement, and not so much the intention forward. Let’s dive into it!

10 Staying Grounded for Extra Confidence & Stability in the Dance
In this lesson you’ll find invaluable tips that will help you stay grounded, enhancing your stability and security. These tips are vital for tango as a whole, particularly when implementing Change of Dynamics. Whether accelerating or decelerating, dynamic shifts can easily disrupt your balance, and consequently your partner’s axis. Remember, being in solid contact with the floor, will not only make you feel more confident, it will also transmit confidence to your partner. And this is crucial in tango and in life.

11 Using our Backs in Non-Circular Movements
In tango, followers usually walk backwards. However, when embracing the role of the follower and performing Changes of Dynamics, we have many forward steps. In these instances, too, it is essential to maintain a confident and assured attitude while walking. During forward steps, both leaders and followers should focus on the point of contact, which is the follower’s hand and the leader’s back. The quality of connection established at this point is of utmost importance. In this lesson, you will have the opportunity to practice and refine all these details.

12 Understanding the Process of the Lead
This invaluable lesson will guide you into the subtleties of the tango lead. Reflect upon this thought shared by Clarisa & Jonathan: “As we start improving our tango musicality and our ability to change the speed, we start to forget the lead. We start making everything a little bit more automatic, up to the point where we don’t listen to, and we don’t wait for our partner.” This resonates not only in tango but also in various professions, where, as we gain expertise, we can sometimes compromise our ability to remain present, curious, and attentive to our team members. It is at this juncture that we are most susceptible to making critical errors. We need to remember that an empathic leader is also a follower.

13 Enrosque & Lapiz Together
In this lesson, you will look into the intricate technical details that enable a comfortable, fluid, confident and fine execution of a complex tango figure, composed of a few elements: the Turn, the Enrosque, and the Lapiz. Leaders, your torso serves as the driving force, guiding the movements of your free leg. Followers, the intention and energy in our backs play a pivotal role, providing leaders with the necessary momentum in this laborious figure.

14 Change of Dynamics in Turns
This lesson presents a slightly higher level of complexity, but if you’ve practiced the exercises in the previous ones, it will feel like an interesting challenge designed to elevate your tango to new heights. Why so? Not only is the Turn a complex element in tango, but also executing it while speeding up and slowing down, brings some adrenaline into the game. At the same time, imagine the level of satisfaction and rush of dopamine when achieving it. Rest assured, Clarisa & Jonathan are here to guide you through this adventure, equipping you with invaluable knowledge and exercises that will unlock new dimensions in your tango!

15 Deeper Study of the Sacada
Having familiarized yourself with the initial concept of Sacada in one of Clarisa & Jonathan’s previous collections, it’s time to dig deeper into the nuanced technique of this element. Pay careful attention to the positioning of your torso and hips, as they play a vast role in creating the necessary space for a secure and visually captivating Sacada. Remember, every well-executed tango figure stems from the collaborative effort and effective communication between the leader and follower.
